Longhorns move step closer

Stephen Spillman / Amarillo Globe-News Caprock wide receiver Billy McGlaughlin tries to elude Pampa defensive back Jeremy Maxwell during the Longhorns' 33-22 District 3-4A victory Friday at Pampa.

PAMPA - Caprock proved to be the kings of comeback Friday night but must wait another week to see of its destiny will include earning the school's first playoff berth since 1975.

Caprock looked headed for a sure loss but used a frantic finish to rally for two touchdowns during the final 30 seconds, securing a wild 33-22 District 3-4A victory against hard-luck Pampa before 2,000 fans at Harvester Field on Friday night.

The win ended Pampa's playoff hopes at 0-4 in district and added to a season of frustration that has included a pair of one-point losses.

Caprock, thanks to Palo Duro's 27-15 win at Dumas, wasn't able to clinch a playoff berth but can do so next week by beating Canyon.

"I was proud of the way we were battling there until the end," Caprock coach Seth Parr said.

Pampa appeared to have ended a six-game losing streak with three minutes remaining, leading 22-19 and giving the ball to Caprock at its 22.

Pampa had rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit and seemed to have nailed the door shut on Caprock when Madison Wilson scored on a 2-yard sweep and Jeremy Maxwell ran for a two-point conversion with six minutes to play for the 22-19 lead.

Caprock was stopped by but gained the ball for one last possession with three minutes to play and moved to the Harvesters 44-yard line with about 46 seconds left.

Caprock quarterback Skyler Artis, playing with a hurt shoulder that kept him out of last week's loss to Randall, stepped into the huddle and told receiver Billy McGlaughlin it was time to do his thing.

"(McGlaughlin) had been making plays for us all year, and I told him he was going win the game for us," said Artis, who threw for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns. "This game was so crazy I thought I was going to throw up, I was so nervous."

Artis lofted a high pass about 25 yards downfield, where McGlaughlin leaped in the air between two defenders for the reception. He was able to keep his feet, shook off one attempted tackle and sprinted into the end zone for a 25-22 lead with 30 seconds left. McGlaughlin caught 13 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

"I just told everybody this was the time we had to do it if we want to become legendary," McLaughlin said of the trying to end Caprock's 33-year playoff drought. "Ckyler told me just haul my rear downfield. Both of their dudes went up for it, and I just made a play."

Pampa kept things interesting, taking the ensuing kickoff and moving to the Caprock 45-yard line when quarterback Alex Clendening found Heath Skinner on a 25-yard pass. But on the next play, Caprock defensive back Efren Acosta intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown with six seconds remaining.

"At 22-19, we told our team not to lose faith, that we got this," Acosta said. "We had three minutes. It was so exciting. When I caught the tipped pass I was going to the house. Nobody was going to stop me."

Both teams moved the ball mainly through the air. Clendening passed for 221 yards, but the Rock checked the Harvesters' running game to 40 yards. Clendending snuck in from a yard out for a touchdown and connected with Skinner on a 12-yard TD pass to lead Pampa's second-half rally.

Artis completed 21-of-30 for 248 yards, found McGlaughlin on touchdown passes of 44 and 46 yards and scored on a 1-yard plunge. Pampa held Caprock's running game to 77 yards.
